OAS FCU’s Sustainable Journey: 2024 update

A journey towards responsible practices for a healthier planet.

At OAS FCU, we are deeply committed to the planet and society that we wish future generations to inherit. A few years ago the Credit Union became an open supporter of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (or SDGs). The 17 SDGs represent a universal call to action to end poverty, build a healthier planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. They are designed to end poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls.

Fostering sustainability

It is our belief here at OAS FCU that everyone can make a difference when it comes to helping make our earth a healthier planet.

Our sustainability journey started many years ago, when we first looked at reducing our use of paper, printer ink cartridges and other office supplies. 2025 will mark our 20th year offering you electronic statements, or eStatements. An amazing 92% of our membership uses eStatements for their OAS FCU accounts.

Not only that, in the past few years –at the behest of our environmentally conscious members- we worked with the providers that manage certain OAS FCU loan types such as CUMA (mortgages) and Velera (credit cards) to get them to develop electronic statements so that our members could obtain paperless statements on their accounts. To date we have switched 332 members to electronic mortgage statements, and 3,388 to credit card electronic statements. Hats off to you!

One tree at a time

As a thank you and in the honor of those (many!) members who have switched to eStatements over the years, we periodically make a donation in their names to One Tree Planted, This is a global organization that is working to combat deforestation all over earth.

Since 2014, One Tree Planted has planted over 135.5 million trees with 378 partners across 82 countries. Through their work, they have restored over 118,518 hectares (292,864 acres) of forest around the world, made 106 cities greener by planting urban trees for environmental justice and tree equity, and more.

We are very happy to report that OAS FCU has planted 4386 trees in your name.

Our commitment to sustainability does not end there! OAS FCU has been an active sponsor and participant in the United in Sustainability Summit created by UNFCU.

Established in 2018, this groundbreaking industry conference brings together credit union leaders, volunteers, and industry professionals who are interested in incorporating sustainable practices into their business models. Our own CEO Carlos Calderon has been a speaker and coordinator in the event since 2019.

Our communities

The Credit Union also participates in community events, and assists and sponsors events that our Select Employer Groups organize.

Our Sustainable Volunteer efforts

Our volunteers also ensure that they spare no effort towards making OAS FCU a place that is respectful towards the planet and society. They do examine our offices, our work, and the communities where our members live for ways to help. With that in mind, in 2022 the Credit Union Volunteers and staff formed the Green Committee to support, promote and implement responsible practices and solutions for our members. This committee also helps drive efficiencies and reduce our environmental impact while creating a positive environmental, economic, and social balance.

It works on three pillars that help steer its labors: people, planet and revenue. Volunteers and staff in the Green Committee work on bringing awareness and make recommendations for sustainability alternatives –for both staff and members-.
